Hello again,
Recently Queen's IT services has developed a database dashboard that allows users to see the number of users connected to wifi access points. Currently Campus Security is able to view this data, on a trial basis. The data can be viewed live and drilled down to a particular access point.
Although we see the benefit of seeing the live connections to determine "hotspots" on campus and large gatherings, IT services has been very transparent with the use of this data, there are concerns with how it would look having Campus Security using the live data. We are thinking of collecting historical data for looking at trends and deploying staff based on those trends.
Is anyone else using this type of data? How are you using it? Any "big brother watching" issue arise from it?
Thanks,
Murray
Hi Murray, While Brock University ITS has similar capabilities, Brock University Campus Security does not have direct access to historical or live data. We would only request live or historical data for investigative purposes in relation to an offence.
Stay well
